About Tours East
In Newfoundland there is a saying that many
of us have learned to live by: “there ain’t been
a bad wind yet that didn’t blow somebody good”.
For more than 500 years, Newfoundlanders braved the elements
and eked a living from the sea. We struggled to live with
the ocean and we could not live without it. We have become
soul mates.
Times have changed and our relationship with
the ocean has also taken a turn. We have become more diverse,
but our hearts are full of the ocean still. We do brave the
elements but we have learned to embrace the salt air and rejoice
in the fact that we live on an island – it’s a
world of difference. We still have our parties in the kitchen
and everybody knows your name.
That is what draws us to return, and as more
of us spend more time “away” we learn why it is
that we do. As the operators of Tours East, we have learned
it too. After many years of racing to the next light and dead
bolting the door, we just wanted something more.
We have also learned that we are not much
different from those around us, which is probably why more
people are visiting us in Newfoundland every day. They too
want to smell the ocean breeze. They want to be called by
name and know that when they leave their car to walk, it will
be there when they come back. They want to stand on a cliff
with not a soul around and see for forty miles. We like to
do it too.
