Francois residents are very proud of our dedication to the upkeep of property in the community. Francois is known for the “free labour” work performed by residents to help their community.

  • In 1989 Candy Rock Bridge, a 300 foot structure leading to the community’s incinerator, was built in 25 hours.
  • In 1991 residents constructed a fire hall, which is fully equipped except it does not have a truck. Volunteer fire fighters rely on ATV's and snowmobiles to haul equipment. To date there has only been one fire in the community and no loss of life. The water source is either salt water from the harbour, or water from the large brook that runs through the center of the town.
  • In 1996 residents banded together once more to construct a new Community Hall to replace the old structure. This building is used for all public and private events such as weddings, parties, community dances, dart leagues, and kids events.

In Francois we are also very proud of the fact that there is 99% employment in our town. Despite the crises that have beset the Newfoundland fishing industry over the years, the fishery remains the mainstay of Francois. Francois is located in Canadian fisheries management area 3PS. This is the only area of Newfoundland which can still sustain both a commercial and recreational cod fishery. Those who do not fish work as lighthouse keepers, school teachers, postal workers, store clerks, hydro workers, fisheries monitors and dock side workers.

The population of Francois is now 140 residents.
