Francois is a place of many special features, but two are especially noteworthy.

Hot Spring
Cooke’s Hole

Hot Spring

Francois has the only known hot spring in Newfoundland. Located about 300 feet up a large cliff called the Friar, when the winter temperature drops to around -10 degrees Celsius, steam can be seen escaping from the rocks. Tuck yourself under the cliff ledge and you will find a temperature of about 0 degrees Celsius.

Cooke’s Hole

Another natural feature close to Francois is a cave found about 300 feet into a cliff called Cook’s Hole. It is named for the famous explorer Captain James Cook who surveyed the areas around Newfoundland between 1765-1766. This cave contains a quick silver deposit. Although not for the faint of heart, this is a climb that is well worth the time and effort.
