Francois Day
Each year on the third weekend of August
we celebrate “Francois Day”. This is a day packed
full of the kind of fun that reflects the spirit of our community.
Events include games, mock jail, dory races, dinner and dancing.
The whole community takes part and visitors are always welcomed.
This day has become one of our greatest traditions.
Come Home Year
Every 5 years we hold “Come Home Year”
celebrations. Invitations are sent to former residents to
come home and see us again. This is a week long celebration
featuring community events planned for the whole seven days.
Concerts, talent nights, dances, suppers, games, and plenty
of fun are all included. Although some folks are officially
invited by the community, anyone is welcomed because in Francois
we go by the old saying “the more, the merrier”.
Christmas Traditions in Francois
In Francois we celebrate many of the same
traditions as other Newfoundland towns, but we also have some
that are uniquely ours.
Francois is one of the few places where people
still go “mummering”. This custom was brought
from England and was once a common part of the Newfoundland
Christmas. Groups of people dress in old clothing, cover their
faces and try to disguise their identity. They go from house
to house and those they visit try to guess who they are. When
during Christmas you hear a knock on your door so loud you
think it might break, followed by shouts of “Any mummers
‘lowed in?”, you know you are in for some fun.
