Birds of many kinds call this area home. Kittiwakes, shearwaters, murres, seagulls, gannets, puffins, dovic (ice bird), salt water pigeons and many species of ducks are just a few that are common sights along our shore.

One of the most majestic and very commonly seen sights is the Bald Eagle. There are many nesting areas along the shoreline, and Rencontre Bay alone has more than five known nesting areas. To see the eagles soar the updraft along the cliffs and swoop down to catch fish from the ocean far below is an experience to behold. It is truly breathtaking.

Other birds, such as the kittiwakes and shearwaters, are found in larger numbers. It is not unusual to see masses of them in a gathering, often flying only several meters from your boat. For bird enthusiasts, the Southwest Coast of Newfoundland should be at the top of their “must go to” list.

There are at least two puffin colonies within a boat ride of Francois. A day-long outing would not be complete without the chatter of puffins clinging to the cliffs or the soft, short beat of their wings as they come in for a closer look. They are a magnificent creature that boasts the glory of colour unparalleled in a world where cold grey granite unites the ocean and the sky.

Birds are not the only sea life you’ll see along this coast. Seals can be seen lazing around in the summer sun or coming in for a look at passers by.
